Jamaica's sprint champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce said whereas she is disappointed that she will be unable to defend her 100-metre title at this summer's World Championships in London, the blessing of impending motherhood supersedes all.
"I think it's a blessing. There are a lot of persons who I believe struggle with having kids. For me to be able to have a child of my own, and increase our family, that's just a blessing, so I'm
looking forward to that experience," she said.
"As for the World Championships, I'm sorry I won't be there but there's another World Championships in 2019," said Fraser-Pryce, who announced her pregnancy two weeks ago.
Dubbed the 'Pocket Rocket', Fraser-Pryce finished third in the 100 metres at the 2016 Olympics behind MVP teammate Elaine Thompson, who went to snatch the double, also claiming Olympic glory at 200 metres.
Fraser Pryce's preparations were hampered by a toe injury, which had hampered for much of the season.
The Waterhouse native said the power of the human spirit drives her. Off the track, she has ventured into business, opening a day-care centre, hair salon and a restaurant at the University of Technology's Papine campus.
"A lot of us become so bottled that we're afraid to just step out and experience what's out there for us. I just know what's important to (me). I rank the things that are important in my life, and I work according to that," she said.
