The nature of Amir Khan's defeat to Saul Alvarez has prompted Kell Brook to cool talk of the two Britons meeting later this year.
IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook has played down the prosepct of a blockbuster all-British fight with Amir Khan following the latter's brutal knockout defeat at the hands of Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
Khan stepped up in weight to face Alvarez in Las Vegas on Saturday - a decision that sparked admiration and surprise in boxing circles.
However, the Briton's hopes of springing a shock and claiming the WBC middleweight title came to an end in sickening fashion as he was sent to the canvas in the sixth round by a fearsome Alvarez overhand right.
Brook immediately called out Khan on Twitter after the fight, but now claims it would be dangerous for the two to meet.
"After the defeat this weekend, it won't be safe for him to fight me. He's had some bad knockouts," Brook told Sky Sports News on Monday.
"I'm not sure what Canelo weighed on the night but it was a lot bigger than Amir.
"He got knocked out in a really bad way. I punch just as hard as Canelo. It would just be a matter of time before the same thing happened.
"I respect Amir for moving up in weight and fighting him. In their mind I think they were going down the line of it was a win-win; he was up against it, against a heavier guy, so it didn't harm anything.
"If he went the distance and lost on points, it would have been good. But losing in the way he did, with a devastating knockout, was nothing good for him. He's had a few now and it's going to take it out of anyone.
"I was watching it with a group of people and everyone wanted me to fight him, but I don't think it would be safe."
Brook moved his unblemished professional record to 36 wins and no defeats with a brisk two-round win over mandatory challenger Kevin Bizier in March.
The 30-year-old's promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed talks are under way to secure a unification fight against American WBO champion Jesse Vargas.
