Police said the three were among a group of four who were allegedly caught staging a robbery at a business establishment along Great Georges Street in Savanna-la-Mar about 3:10 am when they opened fire on the police party that was summoned.
The man who managed to escape was identified by the police as Ryan Johnson,
a resident of Westmoreland address. He is said to be wanted for several break-ins and robberies committed in the parish.
In the meantime, the Independent Commission of Investigation (INDECOM) said the police reported that a security company initially responded to the incident after an alarm went off at a supermarket on Great Georges Street. Upon arrival at the supermarket, the security personnel observed that there was a break-in which prompted them to call the police, an INDECOM release said.
“It is reported that the police team that responded had to take evasive action after they were greeted by a barrage of gunfire. The police returned the fire and a shoot-out ensued. After the shooting, three men were found suffering from gunshot wounds. They were taken to the Savanna-la-Mar Public Hospital where they were pronounced dead. The police reported that an illegal firearm was recovered,” said the INDECOM release.
A team of INDECOM investigators and forensic examiners yesterday started investigations into the deadly shooting.
