At Drake Relays Omar McLeod opens outdoors with world-leading run

World Indoor 60-metre champion, Jamaica’s Omar McLeod opened his outdoor season in style at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday.
Running in virtually still conditions (-0.1mps), McLeod, who last week ran 9.99s in Arkansas to become the first sprint-hurdler in history to break 10 seconds over the 100 metres, clocked a world leading 13.08s, decimating a quality field that included 2013 World
Champion David Oliver who was second in 13.31. McLeod’s countryman Hansle Parchment, the 2012 Olympic bronze medalist, was third in 13.42.
Adams Spencer was fourth in 13.53 just ahead of world-record holder Aries Merriit, who was fifth in 13.61s.
Merritt is returning to competition after undergoing a kidney transplant following the IAAF World Athletic Championships in Beijing, China in 2015.
Eddie Lovett from the Virgin Islands (13.65), Aleec Harris (13.68) and Jamaica’s Andrew Riley (13.77) were sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
In the women’s 400 metres hurdles, Jamaica’s Kaliese Spencer, who signed an endorsement deal with Puma earlier this week, opened her season with a fourth-place finish in 56.39s. She was beaten by Casandra Tate (55.91), Dalilah Muhammad (55.45) and winner Meghan Beesley of Great Britain, who clocked 55.43s.
Ristanana Tracey, who opened with 56.04 at the MVP Track and Field Meet on April 17, was a disappointing seventh in a slow 59.08.
