Two-time MLB All-Star Andre Ethier is set for a stint on the sidelines in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier will miss more than two months with a fractured right tibia after fouling a ball off his shin, the MLB team announced on Tuesday.
The injury occurred last Friday and initial X-rays were negative. The two-time All-Star was still dealing with pain over the weekend and required crutches to get around.
Los Angeles scheduled a follow-up CT bone scan for Monday. The scan revealed the fracture, which will be able to heal without surgery, but the expected recovery time is 10-14 weeks.
"It's a freak injury," said Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman.
"You see plays all the time where guys foul a ball off their leg, and very rarely does it result in this. But it is what it is, and he's motivated to work very hard to get back as soon as he can. Obviously, we were counting on him being a big, big part of our success this year, and we're still counting on him."
Carl Crawford, who has disappointed in Los Angeles since the Boston Red Sox traded Crawford and his seven-year, $142-million contract to the Dodgers, is expected to absorb the bulk of Ethier's playing time.
Ethier, who has spent his entire 11-year MLB career with the Dodgers, hit .294 with 14 home runs and 53 RBIs in 142 games last season.
